Five years ago the Gerhold family decided to stop the madness of a gift exchange in order to focus on the needs of others. Each year, they pick a single charity to support as a family project. Past charities have included the Union Mission, Hope Haven, Blue Ridge Animal Rescue Center and Toys for Tots. This year, it was Nina Gerhold’s turn to suggest a charity. Seeing Christine’s facebook posts about her work with Chesapeake’s Kids, Nina suggested that the family choose our Book Project for their 2014 annual charity and the family enthusiastically agreed. Family members in New Jersey, Florida, Pennsylvania and Virginia scoured local thrift stores and yard sales, collecting gently used books for distribution in the free book fairs we provide to Title 1 schools. They brought their donations to their annual family holiday gathering and worked together to label the books. We were so grateful for their HUGE donation of books and we immediately used them in our January book fair for the sweet children of Southwestern Elementary.
Huge helpings of thanks to Albert and Nina Gerhold, George and Carol Gerhold, David and Joyce Gerhold, Cindy and Kim Dubis, Patti and Bob Hoffman, Jennifer and Blair Gulick and Jim and Christine Galoppa for blessing the children of Chesapeake with your wonderful donations. Also a big shout-out to Leigha, Jacob, Elijah, Hunter and Matthew. It warms our hearts to see families recognizing the extent of their own blessings and then turning around to bless others. Thank you to the Gerhold family for choosing Chesapeake’s Kids!
